Position Title: Director of School Safety and Security
Reports To: Primarily Assistant Superintendent of HR & Operations, or Superintendent as designated
Position Summary: Westside Community Schools is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to join our team as the Director of School Safety and Security. This key leadership role is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of our students, staff, and community members across all district facilities. The Director will spearhead emergency preparedness, oversee safety protocols, and foster collaboration with law enforcement and community partners to create a secure and welcoming environment for learning.
Education Level, Experience, and Certification(s)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Human Services, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
- At least five years of professional level work experience in law enforcement, crisis management, security or related fields providing services to a diverse population, public relations work, and teaching or training.
- At least three years of experience supervising staff and/or other similar leadership duties
- Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in conducting threat assessments, implementing safety protocols, and coordinating crisis response plans to ensure comprehensive protection for students, staff, and facilities.
- Applicants that have Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training will be given priority consideration.
Key Responsibilities:
Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Crisis Leadership: Act as the district’s first responder, coordinating efforts with law enforcement and emergency agencies during crises.
- Safety Protocol Oversight: Lead the development, implementation, and annual review of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) in collaboration with local authorities.
- Emergency Systems Administration: Oversee platforms such as Raptor and ZeroEyes for emergency management, reunification, and threat detection.
- Drill Coordination: Organize and evaluate regular safety drills, ensuring compliance with district policies and state laws.
Health & Safety Policy and Compliance
- Policy Development: Collaborate with legal counsel to maintain policies that comply with OSHA, ADA, and district standards.
- Incident Oversight: Investigate and document safety incidents while recommending corrective actions.
- Safety Audits: Conduct regular assessments of district facilities to identify potential risks and implement improvements.
Staff Training & Professional Development
- Training Initiatives: Facilitate professional development on safety protocols, and emergency response.
- Technology Training: Educate staff and students on the use of safety technologies and communication tools during emergencies.
Technology Integration & Data Analysis
- Tech Oversight: Collaborate with the Tech Department to maintain and enhance tech safety, including surveillance, access control, and cybersecurity systems.
- Data Analytics: Analyze safety trends and present actionable insights to senior leadership to drive improvements.
Community Engagement and Coordination
- Prevention Strategies: Partner with counselors and safety teams to address issues such as bullying and high-risk behaviors.
- Law Enforcement Liaison: Work closely with school resource officers, law enforcement, and emergency services to ensure coordinated responses.
- Parent & Community Communication: Develop transparent communication strategies to keep families informed about safety measures and updates.
