POSITION TITLE:  Secondary Alternate Curriculum Program (ACP) Behavioral Support Specialist (Special Education Level 4)

 

REPORTS TO: Secondary Coordinator(s) of Special Services and Building Principal

 

SHIFT TYPE: Full-time, 10 month

 

DESCRIPTION:  Provide direct special education instructional and behavioral support to students, and assistance to special educators for students identified as exhibiting behavioral difficulties that impede their social development and academic success. The Alternate Curriculum Behavioral Support Specialist complies with Federal, State, and District policies, regulations and/or procedures. The Alternate Curriculum Program Behavioral Support Specialist will assist in the development and implementation of an effective behavioral or specialized instructional programming for students within alternate learning environments.  This position is also responsible for collaborating with staff for the purpose of monitoring, redirecting and modifying student behavioral programming, administering intensive behavior intervention programs for identified students, providing training to other classified staff, communicating with staff and administrators about behaviors, and other responsibilities directly associated with the program management and facilitation.  

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma
  • Previous experience in special education and working students who demonstrate disruptive behavior

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in special education and/or behavioral management (or equivalent experience)
  • Training in Verbal Behavior programming for student with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities and implementation of behavioral intervention plans
  • Minimum two (2) years of clinical or school based experience 

REQUIRED TRAININGS (must be obtained within 6 months of hire, and maintained thereafter) Training opportunities will be provided by the District.

  • Mandt - behavioral first responder for student crisis behaviors
  • Verbal Behavior Training - help design and deliver instruction to students
  • Best practices, laws, rules and regulations regarding:
    • safety and security
    • physical restraints and behavior management
    • de-escalation
    • behavioral intervention strategies
    • IEP/MDT process and development
    • instructional methods and learning theory

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function.  The performance requirements set forth below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the essential functions: 

  • Follow written and oral directions to carry out educational programs of students, including individual and small group work
  • Assist with student self-care, including, but not limited to: loading / unloading from the van/bus, feeding, tooth brushing, grooming, toileting, and diaper changing
  • Possess the physical ability and stamina for a full day of various student centered activities
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise required reports 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Provide training to staff on behavioral intervention
  • Develop rapport, professional relationships, and ongoing communication with students, teachers, and other staff 
  • Work effectively and respectfully with students and staff from diverse identities
  • Carry out safe and effective behavioral management techniques consistent with IEP behavior goals and behavior intervention plans
  • Manage acting-out behavior of students, utilizing authorized de-escalation and physical intervention protocols, during crisis situations
  • Positively represent Westside Community Schools
  • Maintain regular, daily attendance that is reliable, punctual, and dependable
  • Work independently under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods
  • Serve as a team member to assist instructional personnel in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans
  • Support individualized student programs for students needing assistance outside the classroom setting
  • Work one-on-one with students to affect behavior changes; model appropriate intervention techniques for staff members, evaluate student’s needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior
  • Participate in meetings as requested and collaborate with teams to deliver quality behavior support
  • Comply with district standards, Board policies, FERPA and all federal and state laws
  • Perform all other duties as delegated by the immediate supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS: General education classroom, special education environments, and community settings; riding on a school bus; possible exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases.  Position may require travel between sites and/or within the community in a personal vehicle within the regular workday.
