POSITION:  School Security Officer

 

SUPERVISED BY: Principal or designee

 

CONTRACT LENGTH:  185 Days/8 hours daily

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Position is responsible for maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating student violations of school board policies, and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events and is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. Position assists the administrative staff and SRO with enforcing policies and procedures for safe and orderly schools at the building level. Position rotates duties throughout each day and week.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following is a list of the essential job functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made as required by law to enable qualified individuals to perform the essential job functions.

 

  1. Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
  2. Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  3. Assists administrators, SRO and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  4. Supervises and directs pupil movement.
  5. Helps to create and maintain a working relationship with the local police and fire and rescue departments.
  6. Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security and emergency situations.
  7. Provide a safe secure environment for students, staff and guests on campus.
  8. Establish and maintain good rapport with students, staff and community members.
  9. Assist in development and implementation of action plans to provide safe environment and immediate response to imminent threats of violence, criminal incidents, emergency medical incidents, auto accidents and others.
  10. Regulate and deescalate student’s behavior on campus, in cafeterias, restrooms, parking lots and other open areas.
  11. Assist with controlling classroom disturbances or acts of defiance. Request assistance from school administration and/or police, when necessary.
  12. Patrol and confront unauthorized persons for questioning and checking for passes and identification cards as needed.
  13. Ensure doors/gates are locked and opened at designated times determined by principal.
  14. Investigates student violations of school board policies and prepare reports of the results.
  15. Works with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
  16. Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
  17. Maintains security records, logs and reports.
  18. Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law or directed by the District or supervisor.
  19. Abides by District and school policies and procedures, guidelines, directives and post orders.
  20. Reads and responds to all communications.
  21. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

 

OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal, supervisor or other appropriate administrator.
  2. Maintain and project professional appearance as it relates to job performance.
  3. Patrol and set up for after school events as assigned.
  4. Assist with all drills as assigned by principal or designee.
  5. Monitor security surveillance equipment to protect facilities and assets.
  6. Supervise extra-curricular events/activities
  7. Submit work orders as needed.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or GED required.
  2. College degree in Criminal Justice or Public Safety preferred.
  3. Three years of private security, public police or military experience preferred, including knowledge of school and local laws (including search and seizure).
  4. Valid Driver’s License.
  5. Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the task assigned.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of security procedures and District policies and procedures.
  7. Basic First Aid knowledge preferred.
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or their designee may find appropriate and acceptable.

WORK ENVIROMENT:

Duties are normally performed inside a school/classroom environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
