Job Title:  Elementary Behavioral Interventionist

 

Job Summary:  The Behavioral Interventionist will provide on-site and consultative support to staff, students and families in efforts to facilitate positive behavioral change in students identified as exhibiting behavioral difficulties that impede their social development and academic success. The Behavioral Interventionist provides supportive interventions to families and/or students; complying with Federal, State, and District policies, regulations and/or procedures. The Behavioral Interventionist will assist in the development and implementation of an effective behavioral program for students within all learning environments.  This position is also responsible for collaborating with staff for the purpose of monitoring, redirecting and modifying student behavioral programming, administering intensive behavior intervention programs for identified students, providing training to certified and classified staff, communicating with parents and administrators about behaviors and student discipline, and other responsibilities directly associated with the program management and facilitation. 

 

Department: Designated Elementary School--Special Services

 

Direct Accountability:  Elementary Building Administrator and/or Director of Special Services

 

Education Level and Certification:  Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree in Special Education, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology preferred from an accredited institution. Must possess at all times during employment, a Nebraska Teaching Certificate or equivalent, including all endorsements as required by NDE Rules 10 and 24 when applicable.  

 

Experience:  Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the possession of a Bachelor's degree with emphasis in psychology, social work, counseling, or special education will be considered; previous experience in special education and working with at-risk students or students who are demonstrative of disruptive behavior required. Training in Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is highly desirable. Minimum three (3) years of clinical, school based, or district administrative/supervisory experience preferred.  

 

Special Qualifications:  Knowledge of appropriate behavioral intervention strategies; IEP/MDT process and development; instructional methods and learning theory; laws, rules and regulations of acceptable behavioral intervention, including de-escalation and personal safety techniques; interpersonal skills needed to manage crisis situations; organizational techniques and records management systems; standard software applications; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to train staff and parents on behavioral interventions; resiliency, unquestioned integrity, and a commitment to the mission and values of the Westside Community School District.

 

Required Skill and Ability:  

  • Assess and objectively analyze behavioral crisis-situations, make proper judgment decisions, respond and communicate quickly and effectively and share recommendations to various agencies, groups, and individuals
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with students and adults from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; use a computer to prepare sophisticated documents
  • Be trained and updated in safety, security, physical restraints, and behavior management procedures
  • Conduct workshops, training, in-service presentations, etc. in behavioral management techniques and other topics for the purpose of developing skills and establishing effective relationships with behaviorally or emotionally disturbed students
  • Develop rapport, professional relationships and ongoing communication with students, teachers, agency contacts, families, and other staff for the purpose of providing/implementing individual strategies and group interventions that are in line with student goals
  • Work effectively, cooperatively, confidentially, and respectfully with staff, parents and community members regardless of race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic/national origin, religion, marital status, age, socio-economic status or disability
  • Collaborate with members of interdisciplinary teams; provide ongoing clinical consultation to assigned staff
  • Use clinical insights, educational motivational techniques and commitment to excellence to build staff capacity and promote student growth
  • Develop and implement safe and effective behavioral management techniques consistent with IEP behavior goals and behavior intervention plans to reduce the number of disruptive behaviors in the classroom, home, and the community
  • Physically manage acting-out behavior of children ages Pre-K– 21 years utilizing authorized intervention protocols

Performance Requirements:

  • Work as a team member with administration, teachers, behavioral facilitators, counselors, social workers, and other personnel to develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed across a variety of district settings
  • Work independently under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods
  • Assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including a Functional Behavioral Assessment, Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and/or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Support district i66 programs for students needing assistance outside the classroom setting
  • Work one-on-one with students or at the classroom level, when necessary, to affect behavior changes; model appropriate intervention techniques for staff members, evaluate student’s needs and provide interventions to redirect behavior
  • Assess present developmental levels in critical domain areas for the purpose of implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Act as a case manager for students who require intensive behavioral supports within the school building when needed.
  • Participate actively in all team meetings, staff meetings, individual and group supervision meetings and school meetings (IEP, SAT, MDT, etc.) as requested and collaborate proactively with treatment team to deliver quality behavior support and mental health services to clients and families
  • Act as a liaison between district level personnel (Special Education and Special Services administration, coordinators, behavior facilitators) and the building to coordinate district behavioral initiatives at the building level  
  • Comply with district standards, Board policies, FERPA and all federal and state confidentiality laws
  • Complete all required documentation in accordance with regulations (e.g. Medical, IDEA/IEP, progress reporting)
  • 300153.421Maintain all appropriate records including crisis intervention files and/or incident reports, behavioral tracking forms, lesson plans consistent with IEP goals and objectives, attendance records, clinical notes and other records as required

 

Working Conditions: General education classroom, special education environments, and community settings; riding on a school bus; possible exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases.  Position requires travel between sites in personal vehicle within the regular workday.

 

FLSA Status:  Exempt. The employee has a primary duty of performing work requiring knowledge of an advanced type in a field of science or learning customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction and study or has a primary duty of teaching, tutoring, instructing, or lecturing in the activity of imparting knowledge and is employed and engaged in this activity as a teacher.
